The Carmelite Vocation

The vocation of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns is a gift of the Spirit. Through it, they are called to a «hidden union with God» in friendship with Christ, in familiarity with the Blessed Virgin Mary, and in an existence in which prayer and immolation blend into a great love for the Church.

Their commitment to continuous prayer is sustained by faith, by hope, and above all, by divine charity. In that way they are enabled to reach the fullness of life in Christ with pure hearts. Through such prayer, they prepare themselves for ever more lavish gifts of the Spirit.

The very nature of the Teresian charism demands that the prayer of a Discalced Carmelite and the consecration of all her energies be directed toward the salvation of souls.

True to the ideal of their Holy Mother, the Discalced Carmelite Nuns live their contemplative ecclesial life in an atmosphere that integrates, on the one hand, solitude and silence, with a sisterly communion of life, on the other. This is lived in a family...centered on love for the Lord, and ruled by sisterly charity and generous evangelical self-denial.

Formation
Postulancy

One Year

Canonically integrated into the Carmelite family, after one year of postulancy, the candidate officially begins her ascent to becoming a bride of Christ!

Novitiate

Two Years

Reception of the holy habit marks this crucial period where the foundation for learning & practicing our customs and rule of life is established.

Temporary Profession

Five Years

The temporary profession of the evangelical councils—poverty, chastity, & obedience—takes place in a public ceremony, with vows renewed after three years.

Perpetual Profession

Forever

A bride of Christ, with the black veil, is now recognized as such by the Church, whose authority is given by & through Jesus Christ. Oh, the gift of God!

Our Community

With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of hosts.

In our bilingual community (English & Spanish), many women from diverse cultures and backgrounds have found their calling.

Our bilingual family celebrates and gives thanks for the Mexican and Spanish historical traditions that form the foundation of our existence. This includes our revered Holy Parents, Sts. Teresa of Jesus and John of the Cross, as well as our brave Mexican foundresses. In addition, we are grateful for the powerful intercession of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, whose crucial role contributed to the completion of our monastery.

Above all, in the presence of Our Lady, we come together to seek union with God for the salvation of souls.

  • We wear the traditional habit.
  • Two callings within our community: Cloister & Extern
    • The extern Sister has a special call to the service on the outside while safeguarding our enclosure. She is a guardian of our Chapel (age: 18-55).
  • We belong to the St. Joseph’s Association.
